Opera on the Go!
Opera on the Go! featuring Gilbert & Sullivan’s
The Pirates of Penzance
Bring opera in-person to your classroom!
Introduce your students to the fantastic world of opera with OTSL’s Opera on the Go! program, featuring an in-person, semi-staged performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s 1879 comic opera Pirates of Penzance. Designed for grades 3–12, each program includes three workshops: Music and Drama, Character and Movement, and Stage Makeup! The program is recommended for groups of 100 students or fewer for the workshops and as many as desired for the opera performance.
🎼 Music & Drama Workshop
Music is a vital part of an opera. Students will discover how music can create a mood, setting or even help to identify characters. Students will also explore how opera uses the same themes they hear and experience every day in popular music.
👟 Character & Movement Workshop
Students will take part in an exploration of how movement is used to better portray a character onstage.
💄 Makeup Workshop
Singers must master basic make-up techniques to fully establish their character’s age, personality, and appearance. Students will learn a few of these basic skills as they see participants transformed before their eyes.
Program Requirements
- A tuned piano in good condition
- Three separate spaces to accommodate the workshops, including an unobstructed performance space of 30’ x 30’
