Synopsis
ACT ONE: A Tyrolean landscape
ACT TWO: A hall in the Birkenfeldschloss
Marie, abandoned on a battlefield as a baby, has been adopted as the darling of the Twenty-first Regiment of Grenadiers. She tells her foster father, the old sergeant Sulpice, that she has fallen in love with a young Swiss named Tonio who recently rescued her from an Alpine precipice. Since the Regiment has decided that Marie must never marry any man who is not of their number, Tonio agrees to enlist with them.
However, it is revealed by the Marquise of Birkenfeld that Marie is really her niece: she whisks her off to the Birkenfeldschloss where she arranges for her properly aristocratic tutelage and her properly aristocratic marriage to the son of the Duchess of Krakenthorp. Marie’s distress at this unfortunate arrangement finally persuades the Marquise to disclose that the Daughter of the Regiment is in fact her own love-child, and Marie is allowed to marry Tonio after all.
