Synopsis
Romeo and Juliet meet at the Capulets’ masked ball and are immediately attracted to each other. Insisting on the laws of hospitality, Lord Capulet restrains Tybalt from attacking the hated Montagues, even though they are uninvited guests.
Mercutio teases his friend Romeo for his lovelorn state; later that night, Romeo declares his love to Juliet in her garden.
The two lovers beg Friar Laurence to bless their union, and despite his misgivings, he does so, hoping to reconcile the two families. The next morning, Stephano rashly incites the Montagues, and in the fight that follows, Mercutio is killed by Tybalt.
At first, Romeo refuses to fight Juliet’s cousin, but after Mercutio’s death, he is goaded into a fatal challenge. The dying Tybalt makes Juliet’s father promise that she will marry Paris. Romeo is banished from the city.
Romeo and Juliet spend a night of love, but at dawn, he is forced to leave her. Neither Juliet nor her Nurse dares to reveal their secret to Capulet, who orders Juliet to prepare for her marriage to Paris.
To prevent the wedding, Friar Laurence gives Juliet a potion that will make her appear dead, promising to be at hand when she awakens to help her escape with Romeo.
Juliet collapses at the wedding and is laid in the Capulet tomb. News of her death reaches Romeo, but Friar Laurence’s message of explanation does not. Romeo embraces Juliet’s body and takes poison, but just as it takes effect, Juliet awakens. Unable to live without him, she stabs herself, and they die in each other’s arms, begging God for forgiveness.
