Synopsis
Scene 1
Norman, a retainer of the Ashtons, tells Henry Ashton he suspects that Lucy and Edgar have been meeting secretly. Henry swears to destroy Edgar. Raymond, the Ashtons’ chaplain and Lucy’s tutor, insists that it is Lucy’s enduring grief at her mother’s death that causes her refusal to marry Lord Arthur.
Scene 2
Lucy is waiting impatiently for Edgar in the park at Lammermoor. She tells Alice that she is tormented by the ghost of a young girl murdered by the Laird of Ravenswood long ago. Edgar tells her he has been summoned to France and wishes to make peace with Henry Ashton so they can be married, but Lucy begs him to keep their love a secret. They vow to marry when he returns.
Scene 1
Norman has been intercepting and destroying Edgar’s letters from France. Lucy protests to Henry that she will never accept the forced marriage. She yields only when she receives a letter Norman has forged, saying Edgar has fallen in love with another woman. Raymond, torn between his duty to the family and Lucy’s trust in him as her only ally, cynically persuades her that the marriage to Arthur will be best for all concerned.
Scene 2
Guests have assembled at Lammermoor just as Edgar returns to claim his beloved. When he sees her signature on the marriage contract, he curses her and vows revenge.
Scene 1
A storm rages over the ruins of Ravenswood while Edgar and Henry agree to a duel at dawn.
Scene 2
Guests are celebrating the wedding when Raymond delivers the news that Lucy has murdered her bridegroom. She appears, covered with blood, hallucinating that it is time for her marriage to Edgar.
Scene 3
Among the tombs of his Ravenswood ancestors, Edgar is tormented by the thought of Lucy as another’s bride and longs for death. When Raymond tells him Lucy is herself at death’s door, he swears that they will be united in heaven — and kills himself.
