Synopsis

When Turiddu, a young soldier, returned from the army to his Sicilian village, he found that his beloved Lola had married Alfio, the village teamster — so he sought comfort in the arms of Santuzza. That affair was brief — Lola soon lured Turiddu back, and Santuzza was left dishonored and desperate.

It is Easter morning. Turiddu sings about his former beloved, Lola. As the town stirs, Santuzza comes looking for him at his mother’s house. She reveals that she has been excommunicated, but before she can explain why, Alfio comes by with friends, boasting about his pretty young wife.

A religious procession passes through the square and enters the church for Mass, leaving Santuzza to tell Mamma Lucia that Turiddu has taken up with Lola again.

When the old woman has gone to Mass, Santuzza confronts Turiddu with his betrayal; she curses him as he follows Lola into the church. Consumed with jealousy, she tells Alfio that Lola is unfaithful. He swears vengeance, and she immediately regrets having told him — but the damage is done.

When the Mass ends, Turiddu and the villagers drink wine. Alfio insults Turiddu, who accepts his challenge to a duel. He begs his mother to take care of Santuzza if he doesn’t return.

As Mamma Lucia and Santuzza wait anxiously, shouts rise in the distance, and a woman stumbles in, crying. Turiddu has been killed.
