A four-show repertory model keeps things exciting for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Our production team is a mix of veteran professionals and young people with emerging careers working together in our build shops and 987-seat theater. We bring these different people together because it is part of our mission to promote the next generation of production professionals.
Seasonal Administrative Positions
ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR in charge of PURCHASING
A working knowledge of theater practices, an understanding of construction methods, an ability to understand construction drawings, and a valid US driver’s license are required. As directed by the TD and the Associate TD, the ATD of Purchasing supports the scene and props shops by acquiring the supplies needed to build all four shows in the season.Â
Primary responsibilities include researching and procuring build supplies, coordinating transfers between the warehouse and the theater building, uploading and coding receipts to the PEX system, and providing general support for the production department.Â
May be assigned periodic night and weekend work as determined by the Technical Director. Physical requirements include lifting up to 50lb, sitting or standing for long periods of time, and driving a cargo van and a box truck.Â
Compensation: $17/hourÂ

COSTUME SHOP ASSISTANT in charge of PURCHASING
A working knowledge of theater practices, a general understanding of costume construction methods, an ability to understand working costume renderings, and a valid US driver’s license are required. As directed by the Costume Shop Manager and the Craft Shop Manager, the CSAP supports the costume shop by acquiring the supplies needed to build all four shows in the season.Â
Primary responsibilities include researching and procuring supplies, coordinating transfers between the warehouse and the theater/costume & craft shops, uploading and coding receipts to the PEX system, and providing general support for the costume and craft shops.Â
May be assigned periodic night and weekend work as determined by the Costume Shop Manager. Physical requirements include lifting up to 50lb, sitting or standing for long periods of time, and driving.Â
Compensation: $17/hourÂ

Costume Shop Positions
ASSISTANT COSTUME SHOP MANAGER
Previous costume construction experience is highly preferred. The Assistant Costume Shop Manager supports the Costume Shop Manager with the overall operations of the shop as well as creating costumes for the season.Â
Primary responsibilities include load-in and load-out of the costume shop and strike to the warehouse at the end of the season, keeping the shop, office, fitting rooms and shop supplies organized, research and procurement including ordering and sorting supplies as they come in, as well as processing returns in a timely manner, supporting the smooth operation of the shops including machine and shop maintenance to maintain safety standards, managing the Design Assistants, assisting with department communications, and participating in general shop activities.Â
Periodic night and weekend work, as determined by the Costume Shop Manager, is expected; this will include some technical rehearsals. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, lifting up to 50lb, sitting or standing for long periods of time, and operating moving machinery (sewing machine, serge machine, etc.)Â
Compensation: $930/weekÂ

DESIGN ASSISTANTS
Previous costume construction experience is highly preferred, familiarity with navigating in St. Louis required. Design Assistants are assigned two of the four shows in the season. They work closely with the Costume Shop Managers and the designers on the two shows that they have been assigned to.Â
Primary responsibilities include assisting designers while they are in St. Louis, organizing materials in the shop, labeling and swatching fabric, updating measurement grids, updating photos in the shared drive, creating and organizing show paperwork, setting up the fitting rooms each day, taking notes in fittings, assisting with ordering, labeling and tracking packages and return items, responding to notes, and participating in general shop activities.Â
Design Assistants may be assigned periodic night and weekend work as determined by Costume Shop Manager. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, lifting up to 50lb, sitting or standing for long periods of time, and operating moving machinery (sewing machine, serge machine, etc.)Â
Compensation: $625/weekÂ

CRAFT ARTISANS
Previous costume crafts construction experience is required. Craft Artisans create the accents of each character design as assigned by the Craft Shop and Costume Shop Managers.Â
Primary responsibilities include building wearable crafts in various media, repairing and restoring pieces, responding to notes, assisting in estimating materials required, and participating in general shop activities.Â
Artisans may be assigned periodic night and weekend work as determined by the Craft Shop and Costume Shop Managers. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, lifting up to 50lb, sitting or standing for long periods of time, and operating moving machinery (sewing machine, serge machine, etc.)Â
Compensation: $17/hourÂ

FIRST HANDS
Previous costume construction and time management experience required. First Hands work with a Draper to implement the approved construction plan for the costumes assigned by the Costume Shop Manager.Â
Primary responsibilities include applying and cutting drafted patterns to fabric, estimation of materials required, researching materials and techniques, repairing and alteration of costumes, responding to notes, and participating in general shop activities.Â
First Hands may be assigned periodic night and weekend work as determined by the Costume Shop Manager. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, lifting up to 50lb, sitting or standing for long periods of time, and operating moving machinery (sewing machine, serge machine, etc.)Â
Compensation: $20/hourÂ

STITCHERS
Previous costume construction experience is required. Stitchers work with a First Hand to implement the construction plan for each costume as assigned by their Draper and the Costume Shop Manager.Â
Primary responsibilities include assembling costume pieces, repairing and altering costumes, responding to notes, and participating in general shop activities.Â
Stitchers may be assigned periodic night and weekend work as determined by the Costume Shop Manager. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, lifting up to 50lb, sitting or standing for long periods of time, and operating moving machinery (sewing machine, serge machine, etc.)Â
Compensation: $16.75/hourÂ

Prop Shop Positions
ASSISTANT PROPS MANAGERS
Previous props construction experience and knowledge of multiple fabrication methods (such as hand prop construction, carpentry, upholstery, metal working, casting, and 3D printing) is required. Â
Primary responsibilities include managing the build plans for 2 of 4 shows in collaboration with the Props Manager and the other Assistant, estimating, researching, and organizing materials, creating and organizing show paperwork, picking up supplies, tracking purchases and returns and uploading receipts to the PEX system, building props from approved designs in various media, assigning projects to and guiding the Artisans and Intern, attending production meetings and rehearsals, responding to notes, repairing and restoring items as needed, facilitating communication between designers and the shop, managing props transfers, and participating in general shop activities.Â
Assistant Props Managers may be assigned periodic night and weekend work as determined by the Props Manager. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, lifting up to 50lb, sitting or standing for long periods of time, safely using resin, paint, and other volatile compounds, and operating moving machinery (sewing machine, 3D printer, etc.)Â
Use of a personal vehicle in St. Louis is highly likely. Mileage reimbursement at the federal rate is available.Â

PROPS ARTISANS
Previous props construction experience and knowledge of multiple fabrication methods are required. The Props Artisans are assigned build projects based on their knowledge and skills. They work closely with the Props Managers to create the props for all four shows in the season.Â
Primary responsibilities include building props from approved designs in various media, assisting the Props Managers and fellow artisans as needed, responding to notes, repairing and restoring items as needed, helping with props transfers, and participating in general shop activities.Â
Props Artisans may be assigned periodic night and weekend work as determined by the Props Manager. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, lifting up to 50lb, sitting or standing for long periods of time, safely using resin, paint, and other volatile compounds, and operating moving machinery (sewing machine, 3D printer, etc.)Â

PROPS INTERN
A working knowledge of theater best practices is required, previous prop building experience is a plus. Interns are assigned to assist on projects based on their knowledge, skills, and interests. The Props Intern assists the whole of the Prop Shop to create the props for all four shows in the season.Â
Primary responsibilities include assisting with the general functions and activities of the Prop Shop, tracking POs, assisting on prop builds, assisting with props transfers, picking up supplies or last-minute purchases, and learning from the Artisans and Managers.Â
The Props Intern may be assigned periodic night and weekend work as determined by the Props Manager. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, lifting up to 50lb, sitting or standing for long periods of time, and safely using resin, paint, and other volatile compounds.Â
Use of a personal vehicle in St. Louis is highly likely. Mileage reimbursement at the federal rate is available.Â
Compensation: $15/hourÂ
