Opera On the Go! : Stage Manager

Position Description

Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’ (OTSL) Stage Manager is a seasonal (fall), full-time position. They work directly alongside a Stage Director, an Assistant Stage Manager, Singers, and Administration by assisting with all aspects of production development throughout the rehearsal and performance process. This position will be responsible for the duties of Stage Manager on touring Opera on the GO! abridged production of Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha.

Opera on the GO! is 2-hour program presented by OTSL’s Department of Education and Engagement Department which travels to various schools in the St. Louis area. During this program 5 singers, a make-up crew member/ASM, and a music director/ accompanist, will break into small groups of 2-3 performers and present a series of 20-minute workshops (in acting / pantomime, stage makeup, and singing styles, for example) to small groups of students. The workshops would be followed by the entire group convening for a 30–40-minute semi-staged performance of the opera. There will be no more than two performances per day.

Early morning and weekend hours will be required. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, bending, twisting, stooping, and lifting up to 40 lbs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Stage Manager responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing production rehearsals and performances.
  • Supervising Assistant Stage Manager with their daily duties and assigned paperwork.
  • Maintaining communication between the production’s creative team, artists, and the Artistic and Production Administrative Departments.
  • Recording and maintaining production blocking, entrance cues, projection cues, wardrobe and props paperwork.
  • Assisting in clearly communicating and negotiating daily rehearsal schedule needs with scheduler.
  • Rehearsal room setup as needed.
  • Writing and disseminating daily rehearsal and performance reports.
  • Creating and maintaining paperwork as determined by each production.
  • Supervising and participating in the load in/load out of the production at each venue.
  • Driving a production van with show equipment to/from venues daily.

Required Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • 3-5 years stage manager experience preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Ability to read music.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and maintain professional demeanor.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work early mornings and weekends.
  • Ability to perform required physical movements including: bend, twist, stoop, and lift up to 40 lbs.

Compensation

  • This is a seasonal, full-time position.
  • Travel and housing are NOT provided.
  • Compensation: $5,400.00 TOTAL for engagement period
  • Dates of Engagement:
  • Prep period: Friday, October 3, 2025 – Monday, October 6, 2025
  • Rehearsals & Performance: Tuesday, October 7, 2025 – Saturday, November 1, 2025
