2022 Seasonal Production Positions

This will be our first season back inside and we’re we’re so thrilled! If you want to be a part of making the magic of live performance happen, check out our open seasonal production positions.

Our Master Carpenter and most of our run crew managers are hired out of the IATSE Local 6 Stagehands Union and provide a wealth of experience and knowledge to our up-and-coming seasonal staff. Our Charge Artist and scenic painters are hired out of the Local USA 829 Union.

We are now accepting applications for all production positions. Please be advised that we will not begin scheduling interviews for show crews before January 2022.

Drapers

Previous draping and time management experience required. Drapers create and organize the construction plan for each costume as assigned by the Costume Shop Manager.

Some responsibilities include patterning and building from approved renderings provided by the designers, attending fittings, collaborating with designers and the Costume Shop Manager regarding construction and materials for each piece, responding to notes, handing out assignments to First-Hands and Stitchers, and participating in general shop activities.

This position is expected to do periodic night and weekend work as determined by the Costume Shop Manager. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, lifting up to 50 lbs, sitting or standing for long periods of time, and operating moving machinery (sewing machine, serge machine, etc).

Assistant Props Manager

Required experience includes research and shopping skills, knowledge of period styles, strong organizational and communication skills, and knowledge of AutoCAD, Photoshop, and the Microsoft Office Suite. The Assistant Props Manager assists the Props Manager in the overall organization and operations of the shop and attends technical rehearsals.

Some responsibilities include coordinating the construction of props, monitoring their progress from start to finish, communicating with the Props Manager regarding materials, shop supplies, and deadlines, building props, supervising repairs, and responding to daily notes.

This position is expected to do a fair amount of driving and must have a vehicle and a valid driver’s license; mileage will be reimbursed at the federal rate. Either two years working props in a LORT theater or a college degree in technical theatre with an emphasis in props or stage management is preferred.

Wardrobe Manager

Previous wardrobe and management experience are required. Previous costume construction experience is preferred. The Wardrobe Manager organizes and supervises the business of the wardrobe crew from load-in to strike and collaborates with the Costume Shop Manager for a smooth transition of costumes from build shop to run crew.

Some responsibilities include training and managing the wardrobe crew, supervising changeovers between productions, assigning teams, creating laundry and dry cleaning schedules, maintaining the order and cleanliness of the dressing rooms and green room, supervising quick changes, purchasing supplies (e.g. detergent, lint rollers, etc.), maintaining the integrity of the costumes, and responding to notes and fixes in collaboration with the costume shop.

This position is expected to frequently work nights and weekends. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, bending, twisting, lifting up to 50 lbs, stooping, pushing, operating moving machinery, and occasionally working at heights.

Materials Coordinator

A valid driver’s license, a good driving record, excellent organizational and communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are all required. A class E license is preferred. The Materials Coordinator supports the operations of every production department by acquiring the materials each shop needs to finish its work.

Some responsibilities include researching, purchasing, tracking deliveries, picking up materials, checking for packages at the Opera Center, and delivering materials to each production department while checking in with each department head every day.

This position is expected to primarily work early mornings to early afternoons, but periodically nights and weekends may be required as directed by the Director of Production, Technical Director, or Production Manager. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, bending, twisting, lifting, stooping, pushing, and operating moving machinery.

First Hand

Previous fabric dying experience required. The Dyer/Painter is responsible for painting and dying costumes as well as costume crafts, and footwear as assigned by the Craft Shop Manager, and the Costume Shop Manager.

Some responsibilities include fabric painting and dying from approved designs in various media, assisting in estimating materials, repairing, or restoring items as needed, responding to rehearsal notes, upkeep and cleanliness of the dye shop, and participating in general craft shop activities.

A minimum of one year of college-level education is required, with an emphasis in technical theater preferred. The Properties Intern assists the work of the Prop Shop as directed by the Props Manager and Assistant Props Manager.

Participate in efficient backstage operations, scenic run crew duties, and the unique challenges of each opera alongside IATSE Stage Carpenters. This can be a fast-paced look at the backstage world as you work beside AGMA stage managers and IATSE stagehands.

Some responsibilities include assisting with load-in and strike, executing scenic changeovers from show to show, repairing or restoring items as directed, responding to notes from rehearsal and performance, assisting with maintenance and inventory of tools and storage areas, and occasionally members are costumed for onstage moves during the show.

All candidates must be 18 older and should be students or recent graduates. This position is expected to frequently work nights and weekends. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, bending, twisting, lifting, stooping, pushing, operating moving machinery, and regularly working at heights.

Electrics Crew

Work with an amazing lighting designer as they create entirely different operatic looks from one light plot. Hang, cable, focus, gel, and maintain a 450 instrument lighting package, participate in the creation and wiring of practicals and special effects under the supervision of the IATSE Master Electrician and Deck Electrician.

Some responsibilities include assisting with load-in and strike, executing lighting changeovers from show to show, repairing or restoring items as directed, responding to notes from rehearsal and performance, and assisting with maintenance and inventory of tools and storage areas.

All candidates must be 18 or older and should be students or recent graduates. This position is expected to frequently work nights and weekends. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, bending, twisting, lifting, stooping, pushing, operating moving machinery, and mostly working at heights.

Wardrobe Crew

Dress stunning opera singers in colorful costumes! The wardrobe crew organizes, maintains, and launders the numerous costumes used in each production, most of which are made in the OTSL costume shop.

Some responsibilities include assisting with load-in and strike, executing wardrobe changeovers from show to show, repairing or restoring items as directed, responding to notes from rehearsal and performance, and assisting with maintenance and inventory of tools and storage areas.

All candidates must be 18 or older and should be students or recent graduates. This position is expected to frequently work nights and weekends. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, bending, twisting, lifting, stooping, pushing, and occasionally working at heights.

Under the supervision of the Property Manager, and the IATSE Props Supervisor, the prop crew organizes the running, transferring, and re-stocking of the hand props and furniture for four operas. This can be a fast-paced look at the backstage world as you work beside AGMA stage managers, IATSE stage crew, and handoff props to opera singers.

Some responsibilities include assisting with load-in and strike, executing hand and furniture prop changeovers from show to show, repairing or restoring items as directed, responding to notes from rehearsal and performance, assisting with maintenance and inventory of tools and storage areas, and occasionally members are costumed for onstage moves during the show

All candidates must be 18 or older and should be students or recent graduates. This position is expected to frequently work nights and weekends. Physical requirements include repetitive motion, bending, twisting, lifting, stooping, pushing, operating moving machinery, and occasionally working at heights.

Audio Crew

The audio crew works with the IATSE Audio Engineer in all aspects of providing live audio and video monitoring for the esteemed Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and live operatic voices.

Some responsibilities include assisting with load-in and strike, executing AV changeovers from show to show, repairing or restoring items as directed, responding to notes from rehearsal and performance, and assisting with maintenance and inventory of tools and storage areas.

All candidates must be 18 or older and should be students or recent graduates. This position is expected to frequently work nights and weekends. Orchestra Crew

Working with the staff from the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, this crew performs the orchestra changeovers between operas, moving music stands and chairs to accommodate the different musicians required for each opera. This crew also handles all instrument and equipment transfers. Conductor scores are offered to those on this crew who are interested in studying the techniques of our world-renowned conductors.

Some responsibilities include assisting with load-in and strike, executing changeovers in the orchestra pit from show to show, repairing or restoring items as directed, responding to notes from rehearsal and performance, and assisting with maintenance and inventory of tools and storage areas.
